Why Work With a Pain Management Specialist?
Pain is often the first sign something is wrong, and while many aches fade on their own, chronic pain can interfere with everyday life. A pain management physician has extensive training in diagnosing and treating pain throughout the body — whether it stems from the back, nerves, joints, arthritis, chronic headaches, or an unknown cause — and can help you manage it and regain function.
What Can A Pain Management Doctor do?
A pain management physician understands the physiology, diagnosis, and treatment of pain. Depending on the cause, severity, and location of your pain, treatment may include:
- Carefully managed, evidence-based medication
- Established and newer technologies to treat pain
- Targeted injections to relieve pain
- Coordinated physical therapy and rehabilitation
Your First Visit
During your first visit, your physician evaluates your pain through a detailed history and a review of any prior diagnostic testing. If you haven’t had testing, they may recommend an MRI, CT scan, or X-ray to identify any underlying cause, then build a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
Our Non-Surgical Approach
Beyond medication, we also address the lifestyle factors that contribute to chronic pain — activity level, sleep, posture, and gait — and incorporate physical therapy and conditioning to support lasting, non-surgical relief.

Common Diagnoses That Cause Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is a complex condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, limiting their ability to perform everyday activities and significantly reducing their quality of life. Whether it’s due to an injury, a medical condition, or age-related degeneration, chronic pain can have a profound impact. At Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Long Island, we specialize in helping patients identify the causes of their pain and develop customized treatment plans to manage and reduce discomfort. If you are dealing with chronic pain, you may benefit from seeing a pain management doctor , who can work with you to improve your condition and overall well-being.
Common Causes of Chronic Pain
1. Chronic Back Pain
One of the most common complaints we see in our office is chronic back pain, which can arise from several different causes, including degenerative conditions, injuries, and spinal misalignments. Conditions like herniated discs, scoliosis, and degenerative disc disease can all lead to persistent discomfort in the lower back, as well as pain that radiates to other parts of the body, such as the legs. Treatment for chronic back pain often involves a combination of physical therapy, interventional pain management, and pain relief techniques, including nerve blocks and epidural injections.
2. Chronic Neck Pain
Chronic neck pain is another frequent condition that leads people to seek the help of a pain management specialist. This pain can result from various sources, including muscle strain, nerve compression, or herniated discs. If left untreated, chronic neck pain can lead to spinal cord issues and other complications. In many cases, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) treatments, such as interventional techniques, manual therapy, and specific exercises, can provide substantial relief.
3. Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition that causes pain that radiates from the lower back or buttocks down one leg due to compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. It can be caused by conditions such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or degenerative changes in the spine. Pain management doctors often recommend nerve blocks, epidural injections, and physical therapy to alleviate the symptoms and improve mobility in patients suffering from sciatica.
4. Joint Pain and Arthritis
Joint pain, particularly in the knees, hips, and shoulders, is a common problem for those suffering from arthritis or degenerative joint diseases. As the cartilage between joints wears away, bones begin to rub together, causing pain and inflammation. For many patients, interventional pain management, including injections of corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid, can provide pain relief and help manage symptoms. Physical therapy can also be effective in improving joint function and reducing discomfort.
5. Muscle and Soft Tissue Pain
Chronic pain can also affect the muscles, tendons, and soft tissues, leading to conditions like muscle spasms, tendonitis, and ligament strains. These issues often result from overuse, trauma, or poor posture. Treatment for soft tissue pain may involve physical therapy, massage therapy, stretching exercises, and pain management techniques, such as injections or nerve blocks, to help relax the affected muscles and alleviate tension.
6. Sports Injuries
Athletes or active individuals may experience sports injuries that lead to chronic pain. Injuries such as tendonitis, ligament sprains, or soft tissue damage can result in long-term discomfort and hinder performance. Working with a pain management doctor in Suffolk County who specializes in sports medicine can help address these injuries through a combination of rehabilitation, interventional techniques, and physical therapy to treat the injury and reduce pain.
7. Pinched Nerve
A pinched nerve occurs when there is pressure on a nerve, often in the spine, leading to symptoms like pain, numbness, and tingling. Nerve pain can be particularly debilitating and difficult to manage. A pain management specialist may recommend various treatments, including nerve blocks, epidural injections, and physical therapy, to alleviate symptoms and help the patient return to normal activity levels.
