What is a Physiatrist?

Physiatrists, also called physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, are experts in the treatment of conditions that affect movement.  They treat sports injuries, orthopedic disorders, limb loss, brain and spinal cord injuries, nerve and musculoskeletal pain and are also skilled in post-stroke rehabilitation and wound care.  They may employ many other specialists such as physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, wound care nurses, brace specialists, and prosthetists in a team approach to rehabilitation. Physiatrists are experts at coordinating care, keeping patients at the center of treatment and facilitating efficient and effective treatment across the healthcare team.
